"When can we stop feeding at night?" It's one of the most common questions from sleep-deprived parents. The answer depends on your baby's age and weight — but once they're ready, the transition is usually smoother than parents expect if you have a plan.

When Are Babies Ready to Night Wean?

  • 4–6 months: Healthy, well-growing babies are physiologically capable of 7–9 hours without feeding
  • Weight over 7 kg (15 lbs): Can typically sustain through the night on daytime calories alone
  • After starting solids: Once solid food fills the caloric gap, night feeds become less necessary

⚠️ Premature babies, low-birth-weight babies, or those with growth concerns should only night wean under pediatric guidance.

The Gradual Method (Gentlest Approach)

  1. Breastfeeding: Reduce each feeding by 2–3 minutes every 2–3 nights. Once under 5 minutes, drop it.
  2. Formula: Reduce each bottle by 30ml every 2–3 nights. Once under 60ml, drop it.
  3. Expect the process to take 4–7+ nights — don't rush it.

The Dreamfeed Technique

Before you go to bed (around 10–11pm), pick up your sleeping baby and feed them without fully waking them. This "tops up" their tank and often extends their first sleep stretch to 5–6 hours, letting you get a meaningful block of sleep.

💡 Track every night feed in BabySync — timing and frequency. After 1–2 weeks of gradual reduction, you'll have a clear visual of the trend. Ask ChatGPT: "Is the night weaning working based on this week's feed log?" You'll be surprised how motivating the data is.

Common Night Weaning Mistakes

  • Going cold turkey: Causes distress for baby and engorgement for nursing moms
  • Replacing feeds with rocking or holding: Swaps one sleep association for another
  • Insufficient daytime calories: Night feeds must be replaced by more daytime nursing/formula
  • Inconsistency: Feeding some nights and not others creates confusion and prolongs the process
