Baby Constipation: Causes, Home Remedies, and When to See a Doctor
Not every baby needs to poop every day. Learn what's actually normal by age and feeding type, what causes constipation, simple home remedies, and when to call a doctor.
Baby constipation worries a lot of new parents. But normal stool frequency in babies varies enormously depending on age and how they're fed. Before assuming your baby is constipated, it's worth understanding what "normal" actually looks like.
Normal Stool Frequency by Age
- Newborn (breastfed): 3–4+ times per day; yellow, seedy, loose stools
- Newborn (formula-fed): 1–3 times per day; firmer and less frequent than breastfed
- 2–3 months (breastfed): Frequency often drops dramatically — once every 7–10 days can be normal if stools are soft
- After starting solids: Stools firm up; once every 1–2 days is typical
What Actually Defines Constipation
Constipation is about stool consistency and comfort — not frequency alone. Hard, dry, pebble-like stools, excessive straining that causes distress, and discomfort after a bowel movement are the real signs. A breastfed baby who hasn't pooped in a week but passes soft stool easily is not constipated.
Common Causes
- Starting solids: The digestive system adjusting to new foods
- Formula change: Adapting to a new brand or type
- Insufficient fluid intake: Babies need more fluids after starting solids
- Low fiber diet: Not enough fruits, vegetables, and legumes in solids
- Reduced movement: Less physical activity slows gut motility
Home Remedies That Work
- Extra fluids: A small amount of water (30–60 ml) for babies 6+ months
- Fruit juice: 30–60 ml of 100% apple, pear, or prune juice
- High-fiber purees: Prune puree, pear puree, pea puree
- Belly massage: Gentle clockwise circles around the navel
- Bicycle legs: Gently move baby's legs in a cycling motion while lying on back
⚠️ See a doctor if: a newborn hasn't pooped in 24–48 hours / blood in stool / vomiting accompanies constipation / hard, distended belly / no stool for 3+ days in a baby under 6 months / you suspect anatomical obstruction.
💡 BabySync's diaper log lets you track poop frequency, color, and consistency over time. Comparing the diaper log with your baby food log can reveal which foods are causing constipation after you start solids.
